In a recent incident, South Metro Fire Rescue in Centennial, Colorado, utilized a fire blanket to aide in the extinguishment of an electric vehicle (EV) fire. On January 10, 2024, a Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicle caught fire while charging in a residential garage. The Hazardous Materials Team responded and utilized a fire blanket to mitigate the burning EV. This approach involves covering the vehicle with a heavy, specialized blanket, costing between $3,000 and $5,000, to smother the fire by reducing oxygen and isolating it.
This incident continues to underscore the hazards associated with lithium-ion battery technology in EVs. While offering numerous benefits, these batteries can pose significant risks, particularly during charging or in the event of damage. The toxic smoke emitted from burning lithium-ion batteries is a serious concern, necessitating specialized equipment and procedures for safe and effective fire suppression.
