Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, from phones and laptops to e-bikes, scooters, electric vehicles, and mobility devices. When something goes wrong, the fire can develop quickly and create serious challenges for occupants and responders.
I put together this slide show to highlight recent lithium-ion battery fire incidents from April 2026 and the patterns they show.
A few examples include:
✅ San Tan Valley, Arizona: An e-scooter charging in a garage was identified as the likely cause of a fire that extended into the second floor and attic.
✅ Preston, Lancashire: Lithium batteries incorrectly disposed of in a cardboard skip caused a fire at a waste transfer site, activating the sprinkler system and disrupting operations.
✅ Falmouth, Massachusetts: An e-bike battery exploded in an attached garage, spreading fire into the home and leaving it uninhabitable.
✅ Williamsburg, Brooklyn: A lithium-ion battery fire filled the ground floor of a public library with smoke before staff moved the battery outside.
✅ Hollywood, Florida: An electric wheelchair battery made a clicking sound while charging before the chair was moved outside and exploded.
Across these incidents what stand out: charging location is important, and improper disposal creates risk beyond the home, including waste facilities and collection vehicles.
Swipe through the slide show to review the incidents.
I’ve created the spreadsheet with all reviewed incidents, including the title, link, publication date, and description.
🔍 Lessons Learned from February's Reported Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
Reviewing lithium-ion battery fire incidents helps identify patterns that can guide prevention, public education, emergency planning, and code enforcement. The incidents in this review involved homes, multifamily residential properties, student housing, commercial buildings, waste operations, recycling facilities, electric vehicles, and micromobility devices.
Charging Practices Are Important
Several incidents involved batteries or devices that were charging, including e-scooters, e-bikes, electric vehicles, and batteries charged with extension cords or incompatible equipment. Fires in Aurora, Nagambie, Holyoke, Islington, and Berkeley all included charging-related details reported by the news reports.
Takeaway: Reinforce public messaging to use manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid extension cords, stop charging when full, and keep charging devices away from combustibles and exits.
E-Bikes Remain a Concern
E-bike batteries were involved in multiple residential and commercial incidents, including fires in San Jose, Utica, Mackinac Island, Islington, Falmouth, Holyoke, and Crowley. These incidents included a fatality, property damage, building evacuations, and fire department warnings about charging, storage, and product safety.
Takeaway: Treat e-bike and micromobility battery safety as a priority topic for community risk reduction, especially in multifamily residential properties and dense housing environments.
Waste Disposal Creates Risk
Battery fires in refuse trucks in Hermanus and Fairview show how improperly discarded batteries can create hazards during collection and compaction. The Bartlesville and Maddington recycling plant fires also show the challenges of managing large quantities of batteries in storage and processing environments.
Takeaway: Promote clear disposal guidance and strengthen partnerships with waste haulers, recycling operators, and hazardous waste programs.
Fire Protection Features Help
Several incidents show the value of early detection and suppression. The SCAD dorm fire was quickly controlled by building safety features, the Rutgers residence hall fire activated fire suppression, the Utica apartment fire involved alarm activation and sprinkler suppression, and the York County cell phone fire triggered an automatic fire alarm.
Takeaway: Document and share examples where alarms, sprinklers, and suppression systems limited fire spread or provided early warning.
