New York's "Buy Safe, Charge Safe" Campaign Curbs Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
Lithium-ion batteries are more common in our modern world, powering everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. While they offer numerous benefits, including high energy density and long life spans, they also pose significant safety risks if not used or maintained properly.
The alarming statistics reported by the New York City Fire Department, with 240 fires and 17 deaths in 2023 linked to lithium-ion battery incidents, underscore the critical need for such educational campaigns. Moreover, legislative efforts to enforce fire protection safety standards, including the requirement for "Class B extinguishers, battery cases, and automatic monitoring and detection" measures in shops and certification for batteries, further demonstrate New York's commitment to community risk reduction (Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, 2024).
The "Buy Safe, Charge Safe" campaign is a prime example of how education and awareness can significantly reduce the risk of fires in our communities. You can find more information regarding the "Buy Safe, Charge Safe" campaign clicking here: https://www.dhses.ny.gov/charge-safe
