Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, from power tools to e-bikes and even the trash. But with their convenience comes a continued fire risk that’s impacting homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. To help fire and building safety professionals (and the wider community) stay informed, I’ve put together a new slide show highlighting recent real-world lithium-ion battery fire incidents.

Here are just a few of the most notable cases from July 6 - 12th:

✅ Kamloops, Canada: A battery tossed in household recycling sparked a fire at a materials recovery facility, one of several similar incidents this year.

✅ Queens, NY: A lithium-ion battery from an e-mobility device ignited a fatal fire in a local pizzeria.

✅ Holland, MI: Nine fire departments responded to a large warehouse fire involving palletized lithium-ion batteries, with the building’s suppression system preventing even greater loss.

✅ Kalihi, HI: An electric scooter fire outside a multi-unit residential building resulted in serious burns for one resident.

Swipe through the slide show for more details and safety lessons you can share with your team or community. Let’s work together to reduce risk and keep

people safe.

Whether at home, on the road, or in commercial settings, improper battery storage, charging, or disposal can lead to fires. It’s a reminder of the need for public education, codes development, and consistent enforcement.

Lessons Learned

  • Proper Disposal Is Critical: Batteries must never go in regular trash or recycling, use designated collection sites.

  • Sprinkler Systems Save Lives: Early activation can limit fire spread and reduce injuries.

  • Storage Matters: Bulk or improper storage of batteries, especially in warehouses and workshops, increases risk.

  • Public Education Is Ongoing: Incidents highlight the need for ongoing campaigns about safe charging, storage, and disposal.
